Microsoft fills out Hyper-V cloud Ecosystem

Microsoft is taking cloud computing to a whole new level. In the article “Microsoft fills out Hyper-V cloud ecosystem”, Microsoft reveals their plans to provide reference architectures to private companies to help these companies build IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) styled clouds. So far, many big name corporations including Dell, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and NEC, have all signed on with Microsoft as partners to the “Hyper V-Cloud Fast Track Program”. This program will provide these companies with the blueprints for how to detail their hardware so that the companies may run private clouds.

This is an amazing new offering to companies, one that they should take immediate advantage of. Cloud computing has been ever evolving as a great way to help share resources through the Internet, but for many large corporations this may be too risky. These companies have mass amounts of data, which cannot be lost or leaked to anyone. Private clouds could be the answer to many people’s safety concerns. While other companies have began to use private clouds, Microsoft is taking this to the next level with their Hyper-V based clouds, which allow multiple operating systems to run off of a single server.

Essentially, Microsoft’s new Hyper-V based clouds should present many advantages for the companies that decide to use their IaaS, according to David McCann, Microsoft’s general manager of product management. He said, “We believe it will take months off your project, it will reduce your risk and increase your conference in switching on a private cloud”[1]. Microsoft is very confident in what they can offer as a cloud computing provider. Their website lays out the belief that, “Microsoft provides the most comprehensive approach to cloud computing, so that you can harness the full power of the cloud on your terms. Whether in your datacenter, with a service provider, or from Microsoft’s datacenters—and whether in a private cloud, public cloud, or software as a service environment—Microsoft provides the flexibility and control to consume IT as a service, whichever way best meets your unique business needs”[2]. They say that with their IaaS cloud computing service, a company can use their infrastructure resources, such as computing, networking, and storage use as a service to help better your company. Finally, Microsoft says that their Hyper V-Cloud Service is a “key part of Microsoft’s approach to cloud computing, enabling you to build out a dedicated cloud environment to transform the way you deliver IT services to the business”2.

Microsoft has predicted that their Hyper-V Cloud Service Program should be capable of working with more than 70 other providers. In addition, Microsoft has been providing assistance with their Hyper-V cloud services, such as providing training material for the software, deployment guides, and a program called Accelerate that will help test the systems. In addition, they are also offering to help customize the architecture of the hardware for whichever company has partnered with Microsoft. Overall, I believe that this is really a great opportunity for Microsoft, as well as many other companies and organizations. This should provide a significant source of income for Microsoft, as well as a great opportunity for many companies and organizations to take advantage of. Microsoft’s hardware and Hyper-V Cloud system provide a private cloud that offers safety, while running many operating systems all on a single server, that include support and customizability, to help better the efficiency of a business.
