Bayer Workers Get Social with IBM Software

Bayer MaterialScience is a company in Germany. The company has decided to deploy IBM social software to promote greater collaboration and information among its employees. IBM has been trying aggressively to turn businesses focus towards social networking. Bayer MaterialScience chose IBM’s Lotus connections to try to improve their business. This will help Bayer’s employees to communicate more easily and to collaborate and process information globally. This will also be involved with a Bayer initiative, Personalized WorkPlace program. Lotus connections allows Bayer’s employees to have access to blogs, wikis, profiles, bookmarks, communities, forums, file sharing, and other activities. This access will then allow these workers to have contact with a larger network of their co-workers. Bayer and IBM are hoping that this allows their business to become more of a “community” relating to their business needs and focuses. This software at IBM is already playing a role at Bayer. Employees have used the blogs, wikis, and activities to share media reports. Other employees have used the live discussions to reach critical global decisions quicker and more efficiently. IBM hopes that Lotus Connections will continue to play an important role in Bayer.

I think that this software can be very successful for Bayer and other companies. I also think it shows how quickly things are changing in our generation. Social networking has become a major part of technology today. Most people of my age and people both younger and older are very involved with this technological trend. You will rarely walk by a computer and not see some form of social networking being used. People previously would use phones and send mail (post office). However, present day this has changed into people using Myspace, Facebook, instant messaging, blogging, e-mail, file sharing, and other forms of social networking. If anyone now does not use these things they are considered to be not caught up with modern times. This has extended into businesses now as well. Businesses use social networking to keep in touch with their employees, monitor behavior of employees, make it easier for communication globally, and to allow files to be shared over the internet. Businesses that do not take advantage of social networking are considered to be falling behind. They can struggle to keep this idea of a business “community” in the workplace. It also creates difficulty in trying to share files and communicate over long distances that are a common for businesses traveling globally.

Bayer MaterialScience is trying to keep up with this movement towards social networking. IBM is trying to help them to do this. Although it will not be the key to success of any business, software like Lotus Connections will be beneficial to whatever company uses it. It allows more collaboration among employees. This software will help to get rid of things like delays in communication. If it works as well as it should it help businesses to be even more efficient with their time. Social networking is one of the major technological developments in our generation and is going to continue. If people and businesses want to keep up with the times, they have to be involved in social networking.
