AI's Time Has Arrived

The article, “AI’s Time Has Arrived”, looks at how artificial intelligence is advancing very rapidly, and what AI will be capable of in just a few years. After over 50 years of AI, or artificial intelligence, failing to make technological advances, it is finally the time for AI to take charge in information technology. Thanks to trends, such as, “cloud computing, smart phones, expanded broadband capability, improved AI algorithms, plus the steady Moore's Law expansion of raw processing power” the potential of AI is of growing interest in technology related fields.

Over the past 50 years, artificial intelligence has had high hopes in the technology world. AI was founded in 1956, and one of the co-founders is quoted to have said, “Within 20 years, computers will be able to do anything a man can do.” Evidently, we know that this is not the case, as computers tend to be easily fooled by man. This can be seen through the Turing test, which no AI based machine has ever been able to pass. The problem with AI involved it not being able to understand common phrases, and it would generally not be able to communicate back with the correct response. The article uses the example, “I want to drop my car off”, which could mean a multitude of things, including pushing your car off a cliff. Today, there are new algorithms that should be able to distinguish the differences, which is allowing for many new possibilities to arise out of the use of AI.

According to this article, in the next 3-5 years, artificial intelligence will allow for some very new innovations. One of these is known as a VPA (Virtual Personal Assistant), which is something that will help manage your personal schedules, learn who you interact with, and your habitual patterns. It will even be able to make suggestions when you are scheduling events. Another example of what AI is being applied to is what could be developed out of the ‘roomba’. Some sort of device like the roomba could be texted in advanced and told when to vacuum the downstairs. In addition, we might see the availability to ask search engines specific questions, and get specific answers, as well as many mobile applications will become voice-enabled. Just a few examples show the vast range of possibilities the advancement in AI creates. Below is an embedded video that shows a VPA, known as Requall. It can be used online, on your desktop, and on your mobile phone. Requall is a perfect example of how artificial intelligence is being applied to applications that are voice-enabled and easily accessible to anyone. If this is just the beginning, it is amazing to think what might be a product out of the improvement of artificial intelligence.

This article provides an excellent insight into the possibilities created from the advancement of artificial intelligence. It also displays the rugged past that AI had to voyage through just to make it to where it is today. Now, with advanced algorithms for brute force computing, AI is creating new possibilities that are a part of the technology forefront. I believe that if what this article presents is possible, then the future of technology is very good, and should be advancing very quickly, but with the uncertain and shaky past of artificial intelligence, anything is possible, and it may prove to be nothing more than a bust, again.
